Many jazz artists are described as having a "fusion" sound, but Sanchez truly personifies this label. His music is a foot-stomping blend of Latin jazz, funk and rhythm and blues.

Sanchez opened his set with "Mint Julep," which has the funky sound of a '70s soul groove, complete with an organ solo by -Sanchez's musical director David Torres. In addition, Sanchez was backed by bassist Tony Banda, Joey De L锟給n on bongos and percussion, George Ortiz on timbales, and a threepiece horn section featuring Javier Vergara, Ron Blake and Francisco Torres.

In between songs, Sanchez shared anecdotes with the audience. He said the last time he and the band were in Columbus, they were playing the summertime Jazz & Ribfest by the downtown riverfront.

"The last time we were here, we were eating ribs. We were down by the river. That's where I'm from," said Sanchez, a Mexican-American Texas native. "I felt right at home."

Sanchez definitely seemed at home in the Lincoln Theatre, which hosted some of the most influential jazz artists in its heyday in the '40s and '50s. Sanchez and crew paid tribute to one of those artists, African-American jazz pianist and composer Horace Silver, with "Silver's Serenade." They also saluted Chick Corea with Sanchez displaying his powerful singing voice.

At the ripe young age of 58, Sanchez still has amazing energy while pounding away on the congas. Even playing the cowbell, he exhibited a robustness of men half his age. He showed off his skills with an awesome conga solo on "Conga Blue," a tribute to Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria.

Sanchez's set also included the title track of his latest CD, "Psychedelic Blues," which featured an awesome timbales solo by Ortiz. Sanchez and his band took the tempo down a bit with the mellow "Rapture," which brought to mind a laid-back evening in Havana.

Throughout the show, Sanchez and his band urged the audience to get up out of their seats and dance. Several couples took the band's advice and danced in the aisles during a couple of salsa-flavored numbers.

Sanchez closed his set with "Raise Your Hand" by renowned Stax Records artist Eddie Floyd. With his rendition of the soul classic, Sanchez proved that he is just as good a soul singer as he is a "conguero."

As Sanchez left the stage, the audience continued its standing ovation and beckoned him back. He treated the diverse crowd with an encore of the salsa song "Son Son Charari," on which he rocked the timbales.

Sanchez will hopefully follow in the footsteps of other percussion masters such as Tito Puente, who continued to perform well into his 70s. Judging from the Lincoln concert, Sanchez has many productive years ahead of him and many beats left to share.

For years, her mother would set the table for her in the hope that she would walk through the door. Even on her deathbed, she called constantly for her lost daughter.

Moira disappeared on February 23, 1957. Now, more than 53 years later, a former Lanarkshire neighbour is continuing her campaign for justice for the missing girl, in what she describes as Scotland's longest unsolved murder.

Sandra Brown is today seeking an official exhumation of a grave in Old Monkland Cemetery, close to where Moira disappeared. Along with Moira's sisters, she believes the girl's body was concealed beneath the coffin of a man who died three weeks after her disappearance.

The exhumation bid has been going on for at least two years. Local MP Tom Clarke has now written to the procurator-fiscal at Airdrie to urge a resolution.

Brown, who was eight in 1957, has long believed that her father, Alex Gartshore, a convicted paedophile, was responsible for Moira's abduction. She has written a book and a solo play in which she discusses his alleged role.

She said this week: "We are all in despair at just how long it is taking to reach a decision."

Clarke, MP for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill, contacted the fiscal in June to say that Moira's sisters, Janet Hart and Marjory Muir, had expressed their "continuing concerns" to him.

Referring to a meeting with the fiscal two years earlier, Clarke said: "They live with the hope that there will finally be a conclusion as to where Moira is. I am fully aware that an exhumation - if it were to go ahead - would be an extremely delicate occurrence and the decision should not be taken lightly.

"I understand from Janet and Marjory that the fiscal's office have had all the relevant paperwork for several months. It would be beneficial if this matter could proceed sooner rather than later."

Clarke told the Sunday Herald: "The case sadly started a long time ago. What Sandra is seeking to do is not easy - to have a grave opened because she feels she has evidence that [Moira's] body has been buried there.

"I've supported Sandra in everything that she has done. I have written to people who could be helpful in achieving that aim. I do realise that these things take time. We've had a reply indicating that there is much sympathy for the family and that further enquiries are being made."

In Brown's book, Where There Is Evil, she recalls that her bus- driver father habitually groped and behaved distastefully towards young women, and also cheated on his wife. He was also jailed for two years for sexual offences involving the family's 13-year-old babysitter.

Brown was told he had been confined in a mental hospital. It was only in 1992 that she learned the truth. When she challenged her father, he blurted out that he had been the last to see and speak to Moira, the day she disappeared.

More than 70 singers from the group VoxBox Rocks, made up of bathroom warblers who never quite made it to Wembley, will be belting out Houston-Texans a series of classic hits from Stevie Wonder's Signed, Sealed, Delivered to the recent hit by Elbow, One Day Like This.

The group, which started in January, runs six week 'terms' of singing classes for anyone of any standard who likes to sing, be it with a hairbrush in hand or rocking out to their car stereo.

Early 2009, he attempted to sneak in his plan to build 700 houses on Mobberley Farm to get private funding to part-build the same road, now calling it a relief road, when anyone with common sense could see it was purely an access road to his proposed new super estate, and would create daily traffic chaos at each exit - Tean Road and The Green. He would have destroyed not only some of the most beautiful scenery around Cheadle, but the quality of life for residents;

In November 2009, he says he has listened and acted - the new plan to build in the East of the town is a good solution;

On November 12, 2009, he writes a message coercing Cheadle West to highlight the fact development at Mobberley is inappropriate as well as to technically praise housing in the East and the resultant new school. This was a blatant attempt to divide people in my opinion;

On December 5, 2009, he writes a further message stating the "ringleader of the East's Action Group has called him corrupt and arrogant, having a conflict of interests, and he is the most hated man in Cheadle";

On January 7, 2010, he wrote "Not going to Cheadle Unite's Meeting - personal e-mails have discouraged involvement".

We now discover Stephen Ellis turned yet again, from promoting the East building plan, to actively campaigning behind people's backs to get his super estate built again on Mobberley Farm in the West, despite every resident and most of the town and district councils opposition to his biased, selfish and arrogant proposals. Why the change of heart?

Being cynical, even suspicious, I wonder what induced him to go back on his support for his East plan.

Fortunately his true colours were uncovered. The best thing that happened for the people of Cheadle was Stephen Ellis' resignation as leader of the Local Development Framework Working Party.

But Bob Shore claimed that owner Colin Johnson refused several of their attempts to buy the vessel, which is berthed in Grimsby.

He also claimed North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) could have saved the ship, as a clause in its licence meant the authority would be offered the chance to buy the boat before anyone else.

His comments come after businessman Stephen Caunter made a public appeal to Mr Johnson to allow him to buy the boat.

Mr Caunter claimed when he was unable to raise the Pounds 60,000 bond requested by NELC on top of the Pounds 20,000 asking price in three days, Mr Johnson cancelled the deal.

2010-NBA-All-Star Mr Caunter then offered the money directly to NELC for the authority to purchase the vessel and sell it on to Mr Caunter - a deal the council refused.

Mr Shore, who was instructed to advertise the boat in July last year, said: "The responsibility for this outcome lies fairly and squarely with North East Lincolnshire Council for not taking the option to buy the boat.

"They had decided it would be a risk to ratepayers and that they wouldn't be able to take that chance, but Stephen came up with a solution to that problem and they still refused."

Mr Caunter, a businessman specialising in restoration and maintenance, planned to buy and restore the boat.

He said: "I just fell in love with it, but the owner did not seem to want to do the deal.

"It wouldn't be to anyone's advantage to scrap it. I strongly urge Mr Johnson to reconsider my offer to buy it."

A spokesperson for NELC said: "In the current climate of public spending cuts, it would not be right for the local authority to burden council taxpayers with the bill for the Lincoln Castle."

Mr Johnson's brother Peter, who is speaking on his behalf, did not respond to a request for a comment from the Mail.
