WHISTLER, Canada, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Evgeny Ustyugov of Russia captured the gold medal in the biathlon men's 15-kilometer mass start event at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games here on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Russian rising star finished first links of london in 35 minutes 35.7 seconds, followed by Martin Fourcade of France in 35:46.2. Pavol Hurajt of Slovakia won the bronze in 35:52.3.
Ustyugov, a soldier competing in his first Winter Olympics, shot a flawless program and sprinted away from the pack after the final shooting session to win the gold.
It seemed that he could not believe he had won the gold after skiing past the finish line.
"It hasn't sunk in yet. I still don't understand that I've won the gold," he said. "Honestly, I wouldn't even have dreamt that I would be here."
Fourcade, 21, missed two targets in the opening stage and another in the final round to ruin his chances of catching Ustyugov.
"The beginning was hard," said Fourcade. "I missed two targets in my first prone and I say: 'Now it's finished and I can't go on the podium.'

Hurajt, who claimed the bronze after leading for much of the race, collapsed at the finish after completing the race.
The 32-year-old veteran was satisfied with his results, especially his shooting performance.
