Always in pain but Maria's joy

A DISABLED woman has been nominated for an award in recognition of her dedication to helping others. Maria Hanson, 54, was diagnosed with a painful spine and neurological condition 12 years ago that has led to her having surgery a staggering 16 times.

She has undergone a total hysterectomy and lives using colostomy and urostomy bags after having her bowel, bladder and gallbladder removed.

Yet despite her pain and mobility problems - she can just about walk using two sticks - Maria runs her own registered charity to bring smiles to other people's faces.

Her commitment has earned her a nomination for a Derby Telegraph Community Champions award.

Since the launch of her charity, Me & Dee, Maria has worked tirelessly from her home in Chapel Street, Ticknall, to provide people with trips, gifts and meals out.

Last year, she raised enough money to give 19 treats to the value of Pounds 100 to people with disabilities.

They included a day out at Drayton Manor, limousine rides, tickets to the theatre and expensive toys.

The mother-of-two raises the money by organising barn dances, craft fairs, mince pie nights and coffee mornings.

She also "haggles" with places such as Cadbury World to get extra value for the Pounds 100, such as a free lunch.

Maria, who was nominated by pal Suzie Litton-Wood, of Alfreton, said: "It gives me great pleasure to help others.

"I get as much out of it because it gives me something to focus on - it's my lifeline."

Maria set up the charity in memory of her cousin, Delia Worrall, who died from cancer in December 2005. It had been their dream to work together giving treats to people affected by debilitating conditions.

Their motto was simple - "To give special moments when time is precious".

Maria, who saw Dee as her "big sister" runs the charity in honour of her.

The Derby Telegraph has teamed up with BBC Radio Derby, Derbyshire Building Society, Derby City Council and Derby County Football Club for this year's Community Champions awards.
